Murano - City of glass, Venice, September 2010

From Venice, Murano is only accessible by boat. A one day ticket enables you to see all you want to. The wether forecast was not great, so we started early and made it a long but really fruitful day. We started at Murano, then Burano and then the canals of Venice.

An ancient town, Murano is known for its glass industry. Not as pleasant to look at as other islands, as it is more industrial.
The shops have so many interesting pieces to see.
People are born and live here all their life. On a small island.
The city square is nice, bu there is little else to see.
Chandeliers are a major item produced - sold all over the world. Sadly the classical art of making dinner settings has given way to the demand for abstract art. In the factory we saw only 2 or 3 complete dinnerware pieces are sold each year. Whether the craft will last another 50 years is in some doubt.
Our boat stopped near the store we wanted to visit - Vetreria Ducale. The master craftsman demonstrated how various pieces are produced - in this case a vase and a reindeer. The showroom was very extensive with pieces from 10 to 50,000 euros. Tourists pieces are 10-15 euros. A simple piece of a Chinaman was 2,400 euros. Drop off two 0's and I was interested.
we did end finding a nice vase and a decorative piece that made it back to Israel all right - now for Australia!!
the wharfs and the buildings are so different and hence lovely to see.

At this boat stop you are left in no doubt that glass is made here.

this may was helpful in getting oriented.

farewell to Murano. Off to Burano.
