Marseilles - a lovely port in the south of France

Dominating the skyline of Marseilles is the Notre Dame de la Garde.around the Vieux Port is the old city, which includes the original customs house.
A real tourist magnet, the space was perhaps named by a Persian.
we walked all around the port to the original opening. Hundreds and hundreds of yachts.
the at one time heavily fortifies port entrance.

such a lovely place to spend a day
this amazing cathedral (called simply cathedrale) near the theatre de lenche
is near Gare Maritime, around from the port entrance
and is a masterpiece of the use of dark and light stone.

with apricot stone above the entrance - one of the most interesting cathedrals we visited.

the inside was spectacular - so much use of colour.

from the cathedral we head up narrow streets

to Viellie Charite, where

artists come to sketch.
up up up the narrow streets again back towards the port area.
and something different - olive trees in pots.
on the way back to Avignon fields of red anemones (like poppies) brought much delight - especially along the railway lines they were in abundance.

what a lovely day trip.
