Avigion in the Provence - south of France

Just a few hours from Paris on the high speed train lies Avignon in the Provence. Our hotel overlooked the city wall which completely surrounds the city on two sides of the river Rhone.
There are only a few entries into the city by car - a few more for pedestrians, and this is the main one - the Rue de la Republique.
This moss covered piece of rock was unexpected.
the streets are narrow everywhere, and many parts are for pedestrians only.
cobble stones are hundreds of years old.
not a prosperous city, there are still signs of its more significant past.

Muna loves wood and doors, and wooden doors.
like most European cities, the cathedral and in this case the Palais des Papes as well, dominate the skyline.

stone paths remind us of Roman times.
the figure of the virgin Mary, clad in gold, can be seen from everywhere.
On the north side of the city is Rocger des Doms, an expanse of gardens with great views over the Rhone towards Forst St. Andre.

the mural pointing out the sites is colourful indeed.
Around the river, greenery abounds.

these flowers certainly caught Muna's attention.

this is an example of flower petals tightly packed in.
in parts, the age of the wall is showing
a lot of large (long) river boats were seeen - the river must be quite deep
mural in the entrance to a restaurant.
outdoor cafes were the order of the day - thousands of tourists visit daily.

From Avignon we caught the train directly to Charles de Gaulle Paris airport.
